Featured Project: Sharif Muzayen Receives Specially Adapted Smart Home

The Gary Sinise Foundation RISE program dedicates a mortgage free smart home to USMC veteran and law enforcement officer (Ret.) Sharif Muzayen and his three children on April 6, 2023 in Kingsland, Georgia.

Sharif Muzayen was born in Denver, Colorado, and had a passion growing up for science and sports. After moving back and forth from the U.S. to Berlin, he settled down in Georgia in 2008 and later enlisted in the Marine Corps. Sharif held multiple positions during his five year service and was deployed to Afghanistan, where he became Non-Commission Officer in Charge in the Cross Unit Combat Operations Center. He was honorably discharged as a corporal in 2013, then immediately began pre-academy training for the Orange Police Department. After completing his field training, Sharif specialized in identifying and arresting suspected DUI drivers, making 75 successful DUI arrests.

On December 10, 2016, Police Officer Sharif Muzayen was responding to a report of a possible drunk driver. As he was pulling forms from his vehicle, he was struck by another oncoming drunk driver, leaving him with a broken tibia, fibula, a severed femoral artery, and a brain hemorrhage. Sharif spent the next two years on a journey of rehabilitation, physical therapy, and multiple surgeries, concluding with the amputation of his left leg above the knee in 2019. Since then, he has been able to adapt to his new lifestyle, but has felt limited by the layout of his current home.

Sharif currently resides with his family in St. Mary’s, Georgia, and hopes to complete his biology degree and eventual herpetology doctorate. Unable to use his wheelchair to move around, Sharif’s old living situation was not conducive to his mobility and accessibility needs. Through the generosity of the Gary Sinise Foundation, with assistance from trusted partners and the American public, a specially adapted smart home was built for Sharif and his family. The home is one-of-a-kind, is 100% mortgage-free, and is designed with unique features to ease Sharif’s daily challenges. Euro-wall was honored to donate a four panel impact rated folding door system to this project to give back to the community and help Sharif pursue his future dreams.
